I am delighted to inaugurate the 6th year of one of the most-awaited cultural seasons in Manila, the French Spring 2004.
New information technology is fast transforming societies across the planet. People all over the world, as they are exposed more and more to a globalized culture, tend to adopt new systems of values and practices, to the detriment of their national traditions. Local cultures are drowning in the sea of mass and cyber-media, adhering to universal standards that ultimately replace traditions.
In bringing on stage contemporary artists from France, the French Spring in Manila 2004 presents works that do not necessarily belong to the mainstream but instead highlight original creations in the different fields of artistic expression - music, theater, visual arts, cinema. This year's season, indeed, raises the FEAT OF DIVERSITY by offering its audience a series of shows that, while out of the ordinary, are very beautiful, innovative, and charming. In essence, the French Spring demonstrates that the promotion of cultural diversity goes hand in hand with the preservation of cultural identities.
Furthermore, the French Spring in Manila 2004 provides an opportunity for Filipino and French artists to collaborate, beyond the studio or concert hall, involving areas now outside the realm of conventional cultural festivals.
Together with the Alliance Française de Manille and the Association Française d'Action Artistique, I thank all our institutional partners and private sponsors for their invaluable contribution to the success of this season.
I look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming events !
Itaguyod ang French Spring !
H.E. Renée Veyret, Ambassador of France to the Philippines
