French Film Festival Schedule

Much like the French, the Filipinos are avid fans of showbiz. As movies offer a clear reflection of society, it provides an ideal medium for the promotion of understanding between cultures.

In a society where cinema plays an important role, the French Film Festival becomes the ideal venue for Filipinos to discover France, its landscape, its people, its culture. While the French classics remain a source of inspiration for the local film-makers, the current releases of the French movie houses give the audience a wider view of life in contemporary France. Indeed, in the past few years, a growing number of movie-goers have been flocking to the festival to watch a different kind of cinema, to see the beautiful images of the French countryside, the alluring actors and sensual actresses of the glittering French movie industry. Ultimately, it is a way of life that they discover on the big screen, one that is not necessarily unfamiliar, as common situations of the human condition are artistically portrayed by today's talented Directors of French cinema.

The 9th French Film Festival further demonstrates how French audiovisual action in the Philippines goes beyond the exhibition of French movies. Au Bout du Rouleau by Thierry Binisti is a Franco-Philippine co-production that was shot in the Philippines and involved a handful of Filipino actors in the cast. The festival is also proud to present the short film Binyag by Mariami Tanangco, Ishmael Bernal Awardee for Young Cinema, which was in the Official Selection of the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand France. In further tribute to Philippine cinema, the French Spring salutes « Babae sa Breakwater » of Mario O'Hara, honored in this year's Director's Fortnight in Cannes !
